Sport Climbing

New to climbing but want to give it a go? With one less thing to think about, and the added security of fixed bolts, sport climbing is good place to start...indoor or outdoor!

  • Indoor climbing walls are probably the easiest and least intimidating environments to get started. Shoes and harnesses can be hired, the fundamentals of climbing movements can be learnt while bouldering, then moving on to tying onto a rope, belaying, top-roping and eventually lead climbing. These are all useful skills to know before heading outside. The Beacon or Indy Climbing Walls would be our playground for such sessions.

  • Outdoor sport climbing is the logical progression from indoor climbing. Learning how to move on the different types of real rock can be very disorienting. In addition to this there are many environmental factors to consider such as the weather, rockfall, exposure, understanding guidebooks etc. You will also need to learn how to thread the anchor safely when the last person gets to the top. Improving your rock climbing skills while sport climbing is in my opinion also one of the key elements to progressing in trad. Coastal limestone or the slate quarries are the main venues for sport climbing North Wales.
